Monsoon frizz rescue: what we do differently in July

Every July our basin routine changes. Cooler rinses, a different mask, an anti-humectant finish, and a blowdry we deliberately do not take all the way to bone dry. A short note on why.

Frizz is not damage. Frizz is hair doing exactly what physics says it should: dry hair in humid air pulls moisture from the atmosphere, swells unevenly, and lifts the cuticle. So the July fix is not more moisture — it is the right kind, sealed properly.

What changes at the basin

We drop the rinse temperature. Hot water in July feels lovely and undoes everything you are about to pay for. We switch the standard mask for a lighter one with more protein and less glycerin — glycerin is a humectant, and a humectant in 85% humidity pulls water into the shaft from the air and makes swelling worse. That is the single most common reason a "moisturising" product makes monsoon frizz worse rather than better.

What changes at the chair

An anti-humectant sealing serum before heat, not after. And we do not blow-dry to bone dry. We take hair to about 95% and let it finish in the air, because that last five percent is where the over-drying and the static happen.

If you are getting a blowdry for an event, come in the day before rather than the morning of. Day-old hair in monsoon holds a style considerably better.

What you can do at home

Sleep on a satin or silk pillow cover, or tie hair in a loose high bun. Skip the towel turban — cotton terry is abrasive and creates most of the surface frizz people blame on the weather. An old cotton t-shirt does the same job without the roughing.

And do not brush dry curly or wavy hair in the monsoon. Detangle wet, with conditioner in, and leave it alone after that.

Ask us for the monsoon add-on at your next appointment — it is fifteen minutes at the basin and it is the difference between a week of good hair and a week of tying it back.
