Skincare for AQI 400: what actually helps in Delhi's smog season

Particulate matter settles on skin, drives oxidative stress and makes everything from acne to pigmentation worse between October and January. A realistic, four-product routine that does not cost ₹20,000.

Between late October and January, Delhi's air carries PM2.5 particles small enough to settle into pores and small enough to generate free radicals on the skin surface. The visible results are familiar to everyone who lives here: dullness, congestion around the nose and jaw, more pigmentation, and a barrier that seems to break at the slightest provocation.

What smog actually does

Particulates do two things. They sit physically on the skin and mix with sebum, which is why cleansing matters more in these months. And they trigger oxidative stress, which degrades collagen and darkens existing pigmentation. This is why the same person's melasma is visibly worse in December than in July despite less sun.

The four things that work

Double cleanse in the evening. Not a ten-step routine — an oil or balm cleanser to lift the particulate-and-sebum layer, then your normal gentle face wash. Skip this and everything else you apply is sitting on a layer of grime.

A morning antioxidant. Vitamin C at 10–15% is the best-studied option and the most useful single purchase for this season. If it stings, a lower concentration or a derivative like ethyl ascorbic acid does most of the job. Apply on dry skin, before sunscreen.

Barrier repair at night. Ceramides, niacinamide at 4–5%, or a plain occlusive over your moisturiser. Delhi winters are dry as well as dirty and most "sensitivity" in December is dehydration.

Sunscreen, still. Smog scatters light but does not block UVA, which is the wavelength that drives pigmentation. SPF 30 minimum, every morning, cloud cover or not.

What to skip

Do not stack actives in this season. Retinol plus acids plus vitamin C on a barrier already under load is how people end up with perioral dermatitis in January. Pick one active and be consistent. Do not chase "detox" or "anti-pollution" claims — the only anti-pollution mechanism with evidence is antioxidants plus cleansing, and you already have both.

Do not get an aggressive peel during peak AQI weeks. A compromised barrier and 400 µg/m³ outside is a bad combination. Save the peel for February.

In-salon, what is worth it

Hydration facials and gentle enzymatic exfoliation, every three to four weeks. Skip the extraction-heavy "deep cleanse" that leaves you red for two days — inflamed skin in this air stays inflamed longer. And ask for a barrier-focused mask rather than a clay one if your skin feels tight walking in.
